Abstract:
The objective of this technique support effort has been to study, determine and demonstrate an efficient method of combiningdecombining four wide-band data bit-streams for transmission over a single microwavemillimeter facility as required for MALLARD Down-the-Hill radio links. The review of possible techniques revealed that the use of two sets of orthogonal subcarriers for combining the bit streams into a single baseband signal would result in a lower transmitter power and a smaller RF bandwidth than any of the other techniques. This technique also requires the least circuitry, is versatile, and has advantageous operating features. The feasibility of this selected technique, entitled ORTHOPLEX, was demonstrated from the construction and testing of two model terminals. The numerous technical tradeoffs and details which were required in the design of the system components are enumerated and discussed. The subassembly and system tests and results are presented in order to give a complete picture of the systems performance. The capability of the models and hence the feasibility of the selected technique is therefore fully demonstrated.
