Abstract:

A high resolution spectroscopic study of the 6943.8A water vapor line in the telluric spectrum has been undertaken. Data was examined using a scanning slit photometer located at the exit plane of a ten meter Czerny-Turner spectrometer. An analysis has been made of the errors introduced into the line parameters due to the physical slit widths and the speed of the scanning system. It is shown that the resultant telluric line can be approximated by an equivalent Lorentz line. At least squares program is used to evaluate the line strength and half width of the equivalent Lorentz line. Some observed telluric spectra are presented. A calculation is presented of the overlap beam area of a laser radar in which the optical axis of the transmitter and receiver beams are parallel but separated in space. Results of the calculation are given in the form of graphs involving the ratio of overlap area to that of the transmitted radar pulse as a function of range normalized by transmitter-receiver spacing. Calculations were performed for combinations of transmitter and receiving beam widths of 0.001, 0.003, 0.005, and 0.007 radians. Author
