Abstract:

The peak gain method, a theoretical technique for determining growth characteristics of plasma instabilities, is applied to the moving striation and beam-plasma instabilities. The method for N-dimensions is presented and for one dimension, the validity conditions are discussed. Application to moving striations instability requires elementary mathematical analysis, and application to the beam-plasma instability requires a digital computer. Results for the moving striations are in good agreement with an independent analysis. The results for the beam-plasma do not agree with other work, however the validity conditions are shown not to be satisfied. The method must be extended to treat this case. Author
