Abstract:

The purpose of the program was to provide a prototype equipment system capable of performing more efficient operational functions than existing equipment needed for the handling and transport of large monolithic or segmentized solid rocket motors. The particular functional design for the system was concentrated on potential launch complex handling and transport requirements for segments weighing up to 91,000 pounds each for 120 inch diameter segments and up to 350,000 pounds each for the 156 inch diameter solid motor configuration. The resultant equipment system, LOTS, one of the worlds largest rubber-tired, self-powered and self-propelled vehicles, makes maximum use of standard off-the-shelf components and demonstrates that the design and fabrication of an equipment system of such proportion and complexity is well within the existing automotive-state-of-the-art.
