Abstract:
The rapid retrieval of experimental data has long been a difficult problem concerning scientists and engineers. Chemists at the AFWL Radiobiology Facility, in particular, were confronted with large amounts of grouped data from sheep radiation experiments. To solve their data retrieval problem, a computer code called FARM Fast Access Retrieval Multiprogram was written for the CDC 6600. The grouped structure of the data led to the development of a linking mechanism between each subjects data and the measured attribute factors. With the use of this method, the access time to a given datum was reduced from that required by conventional retrieval methods. In addition to its retrieval function, FARM readily updates the current data file with new data, provides for unlimited blocking of data within the allotted memory space, and relates data according to a wide range of logical and statistical criteria. Combining these characteristics with its speed and adaptability, the FARM computer code is a significant advancement in solving the data retrieval problem. Author
