Abstract:

The article gives an overall survey of the current extraordinary development of particle accelerators and comprises, in addition to the revolutionary design proposals which have been made, a discussion of the many studies which have been made with a view to improving and perfecting existing accelerator systems. The author concedes that this survey is necessarily cursory and that in the process of summing up much has been overlooked. It is concluded that the facts of the theoretical and technical progress made in the field to date leave the impression that the particle accelerator installations which as of the present can be designed, developed and built will make it possible to investigate under laboratory conditions that region of high energies which, up to the present, is only to be encountered in cosmic radiation.
