Report Date:

Abstract:
The objective of the program was to advance high energy forming beyond the present state-of-the-art by developing a new and highly mechanized forming system capable of fabricating part shapes and materials beyond the limits of conventional forming equipment. This was achieved by the development of a new type of High Energy Forming HEF Machine. Rated for a static load capacity of 25,000 tons, the machine integrates high explosive, capacitor discharge and high pressure liquid to 50,000 psi forming processes into a single, closed forming system. These processes can be used singly or in combination to form a wide range of part shapes and materials. The machine also features an air flotation tool handling system and a semi-automatic control system. A test program to evaluate the forming capabilities of the HEF Machine verified the increased efficiencies of the high energy processes for producing high quality sheet metal parts with increased formability limits over conventional forming.
