Abstract:
The intermediate reactions which occur during oxidation of cyclohexane were traced largely by radioactive tagging techniques. By this means, rates of formation for the two principal intermediate products--cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone--could be determined at any time during the oxidation reaction. On the basis of such information plus theory, details of the process, such as that the adipic acid is a product of the oxidation of the cyclohexanone, were worked out. Similarly, the conclusion was reached that decomposition of the hydroperoxide leads to the formation of the cyclohexanol and the cyclohexanone. Results obtained by using a glass vessel instead of a steel autoclave were also investigated and a significant difference in the process was noted. Author
