Abstract:

Investigation of the interaction of ozone and potassium hydroxide has shown that the reaction product is a formerly unknown higher oxide of potassium, potassium oxonide KO3. It was then assumed that similar oxides are formed by the other alkali metals. In the reaction between ozone and sodium, rubidium and cesium hydroxides, as is well known, these materials assume an orange color just as KOH does. We conducted an investigation into the reaction of ozone with NaOH, RbOH and CsOH, and, by a method similar to the synthesis of KO3, obtained high-percentage compounds of sodium, rubidium and cesium ozonides. With regard to lithium ozonide, the experimental data and theoretical considerations indicate that it should be possible to obtain this compound by the method given above. Author
