Abstract:

A proton spectrometer and an electron spectrometer for measurement of the fluxes, energies, and directions of electrons and protons in the radiation belts are described. Electrons from 0.1 to 6.7 MeV and protons from 0.06 to 3.2 MeV are each measured at 12 energies by pulse height analysis. The electron spectrometer is particularly well suited for measurements at synchronous altitude in the outer radiation belt. The electrons deposit energy in a plastic scintillator that is viewed by a photomultiplier the energies are measured by a pulse height analyzer. A surrounding plastic scintillator in anticoincidence, viewed by a second photomultiplier, eliminates penetrating electrons and protons. In the proton spectrometer protons deposit energy in a solid state detector the energies are measured by a pulse height analyzer. A plastic scintillator in anticoincidence with the solid state detector, viewed by a photomultiplier, eliminates the penetrating electrons and protons. The proton detector counting rate range and discrimination against backgrounds enable it to work well over the entire regions of the proton belts as well as in the intense electron regions of the inner and outer electron radiation belts. Geometrical factors, counting rate ranges, channel center energies, energy widths, and resolutions are given for the detectors. Author
