Abstract:

Metallographic, electron microprobe, electron microscopy, and microhardness techniques were used to study the compatibility of SiC filaments in titanium at high temperatures. Diffusion of carbon, silicon, and titanium was observed and temperature-dependent interaction zones, composed of titanium silicides and TiC, formed after isothermal reaction in the 650 -1050C range. An activation energy of 36.5 kcalmole was established for the reaction. An empirical equation relating zone width, reaction time, and reaction temperature was derived. After isothermal reaction at 1050C, discrete TiC particles and an apparent interaction between SiC and the tungsten core were observed. Author
