Abstract:

Aqueous solutions of many acids, bases and salts are fairly good electrical conductors. This electrolytic conductivity is due entirely to movement of ions in solution. There is no electronic conductivity such as that observed with metals and semiconductors. The paper describes work that has been carried out to explore possible application areas that might emerge from a study of how such solid-electrolyte electrode potentials can sense and respond to changes in the external environment.
