Abstract:
During the rapid advance of the electronic computer as a useful tool in engineering analysis, many methods have been developed that take advantage of the computers ability to rapidly perform large amounts of detailed calculation. One now well-established concept for the stress analysis of plane stress systems in the theory of elasticity is to approximate the real, continuous system as one composed of discrete elements, interconnected in some fashion--hence, the finite element technique. Although the method itself is in an advanced state of development in plane stress analysis, little has been accomplished as yet in applying the method to real problems in rock mechanics. Author
