Abstract:

Under the influence of a penicillin concentration of 2000 units1 ml of medium, the development of large round bodies of Proteus vulgaris proceeds somewhat differently under anaerobic conditions than in the presence of oxygen. The most important characteristic of such a development is the delay of regeneration into new bacilli and the tendency towards the formation of L-colonies. An unusual method is described of the regeneration of secondary bacilli from large round bodies by means of the so-called central fragmentation. Author
