Abstract:

A cooperative Naval Oceanographic Office, University of Wisconsin, and U.S. Coast Guard geological, geophysical survey was conducted in the northern Labrador Sea during August and September 1967. Bathymetry, magnetics, seismic reflection, and seismic refraction observations were obtained. The geomorphology of the sea floor was delineated and was found to be more complex than previously thought. North-south striking sea floor canyons and a trench at the base of the Greenland continental slope were investigated. These features possibly are the result of large scale sea floor sculpting by bottom currents. Investigations revealed that the western portion of Davis Strait is swept clear of sediments and consists of outcropping basement rock. Author
