Report Date:

Abstract:

This interim report describes the effects of planar acoustic baffles upon the response characteristics of hydrophones. The report explains the problems encountered with the acoustic baffle and develops the various baffle models studied by the Sperry Gyroscope Division for the Office of Naval Research, Acoustics Program. Baffle models developed consist of infinitely thick fluids, infinitely thick elastics, and multilayer configurations of finite fluid and elastic layers. A computer program has been written to expedite the calculations required for each of the different models. The theoretical responses obtained from the computer are presented and compared to the actual test results. The results of the study are discussed at the end of this report. Additional analytical and experimental investigations on baffle materials will be conducted during the next phase of the program.
