Abstract:
The evaluation of the pavement at the U. S. Naval Outlying Field, San Nicolas Island, California is presented with the allowable gross load capacities of the runways, taxiways, and parking aprons for single, dual, single-tandem and dual-tandem wheel assembly aircraft. Field investigations consisted of testing with surface plate loads on the asphaltic concrete pavements coring both asphaltic concrete and portland cement concrete pavements sampling pavements for subsequent laboratory testing determining in place density and moisture contents of the base, subbase, and subgrade, sampling these materials for laboratory testing plate load testing of the base and subgrade augering to a depth of six feet and visually classifying the subgrade materials to this depth.
