Abstract:

A study was made of the effect of temperature on the chemiluminescence of luminol in the presence of the following catalysts hemin chloride, salicylaldehyde ethylenene diamine-ferric chloride, hemoglobin, and potassium ferrocyanide. The first two of these catalysts require a larger temperature effect for the luminol reaction and consequently, higher values of the activation energy. Hemoglobin and ferrocyanide, on the other hand, catalyze the luminescence of luminol more thoroughly, almost without addition of activation energy, and for them the temperature quotients are hardly greater than 1. These experimental facts, which are associated with the chemical composition of the catalysts used, are of value in studying the mechanism of the catalytic reaction caused by iron complexes. Only iron complexes of a hemoglobin character can evoke the peroxidative effect, which is actually only efficient in the sense of emission of the light of luminescence, in a through manner the complexes which are similar to hemin in their principal chemical composition cause simultaneous peroxidative and catalytic effects, and the purely catalytic processes may even predominate.
