Abstract:

A new plasma diagnostic tool, called a plasma scanner, has been developed for use in obtaining current cross sections and current-voltage characteristics. The scanner assembly consists of a water-cooled copper ring anode, boron-nitride baffle, boron-nitride scanning wheel, and plane copper collector. The scanner was tested in a hollow cathode argon arc. The scanner indicated a higher electron temperature than did a cylindrical Langmuir probe positioned closer to the cathode. The scanner showed a sharp increase in electron current in the center of the arc but the probe did not. Possible explanations of the discrepancies are presented. Author
