Abstract:
The work reported herein relates to the preparation of yttrium aluminum garnet, yttrium aluminate and several C-type rare earth oxides by a hollow cathode float-zone method. The problems associated with the growth of good yttrium aluminum garnet crystals have been solved. In addition, several such crystals of good optical perfection were prepared. The growth of yttrium aluminate crystals and erbium oxide crystals was also investigated. Crystal cracking of the erbium oxide is still a major problem, and the incongruency and metastability of the yttrium aluminate has resulted in limiting the length of crystal boule which can be grown. The use of low density feed rods is being investigated to eliminate cracking of the erbia, and the growth of neodymium doped yttrium aluminate is planned as the larger neodymium ion size may act to stabilize the aluminate structure.
