Abstract:
Hull girder stresses, ship motions, and wave heights were measured while the USS EDWARD MCDONNELL DE-1043 was operated at selected speeds and relative headings to the waves in the various seas encountered during the trials. Characteristic relationships between ship response and wave height are given based on 55 test runs, each of about 30-min duration. Severe whipping stresses were registered during a 20-knot test run in high State 6 bow seas. The most severe ordinary wave-induced stresses were registered in following seas. The most severe overall stresses, which included ordinary wave and whipping stresses, were registered in head and bow seas. The maximum measured stresses compare with calculated stresses for the 1.1 sq root of L wave. Author
