Corporate Author:

Report Date:
1968-02-01
Abstract:
A bibliography presented in the first part of this report lists literature sources on the surface properties of carbon and graphite, in bulk and fiber form, selected from the point of view of their relevance to the technology of composite materials. The topics considered are morphology, surface compounds, wetting and adsorption properties of different forms of carbon, and the results of studies specifically directed toward modifying the surface of carbon and graphite fibers in order to improve their performance in composites. The second part contains the most recent experimental data on mercury density, pore-size distribution and surface area of low modulus carbon, and graphite fibers, and of high modulus graphite fibers. Some preliminary results of surface treatment of a graphite yarn with chromic acid solution are also given.
