Abstract:

Aging sites from a Polaris Cycling Unit were subjected to alkaline hydrolytic degradation and analysis of the reaction product revealed some hydroxyl prepolymer, confirming that crosslinked polyurethane polymer is an important organic component of aging sites. Procedures which have been developed for the chemical analysis of a polyurethane propellant were applied to a PBAN-epoxide propellant which had been stored at ambient conditions for 4 years. This propellant sample contained low molecular weight binder fragments. Evaporative loss of this low molecular weight material could be a cause for altering of mechanical properties upon long storage. Author
