Abstract:
A full-hard U-tube type launch system is being developed for use with the Atlas missile. The missile will be stored below ground and launched from one leg of the U, while the other leg will be used to carry the rocket exhaust gases to ground level during firing. A 130 scale test program was initiated to investigate the acoustic environment of an Atlas missile and the rocket exhaust flow characteristics during a subsurface launch. The acoustical environment of the full scale launch system will be predicted using scale factors derived from a comparison of the 130 scale results obtained in these tests and full scale free field acoustical measurements previously obtained on full scale test stands. The information presented in this report includes the rocket operating and missile heating parameters for free field acoustical tests using a Sycamore type flame deflector. Also included are the exhaust flow characteristics of a 130 scale 180 degree U-tube graphite deflector. The acoustical data are being analyzed. Author
