Abstract:

This report describes the continuation of analytical studies and experimental tests to demonstrate, using a two-element array breadboard, the feasibility of coherent optical array techniques. By means of streak pattern photographs of separated beam outputs, servo control to maintain the relative phase of the beams was successfully demonstrated. The system amplifiers were repetitively pulse pumped to produce a 7 db gain through each amplifier. Experimental tests were completed with respect to successful demonstration of the optical array techniques as applied to coincident beams at 2000-joule pump power. Problems were solved in extending the experimental tests from coincident beam operation to parallel separated beams. Work conducted on the thermal effects on the system amplifiers under repetitive high average power pumping is presented in this report. Eventually, a YAG laser will be used as the master oscillator for the system development work in this area is reported. Author
