Abstract:

A study of different problems arising in the application of the Fourier transform method has been made. It is shown that if the two beam interferometer is a Michelson interferometer with a beam of finite solid angle which is the practical case, the instrumental line shape is the convolution of a rectangular by a sin xx function, and the resolving power is proportional to the maximum path difference. It is then examined in which wavelength regions this method appears to be useful, and the order of magnitude of the resolving power that can be reached. The results of measurements on a particularly simple spectrum, consisting of only two lines are given the distance between the D lines of sodium has been measured with an estimated error of 1200,000 and the separation of a Zeeman doublet in a 800 gauss field with an error of 11,000.
