Abstract:

The evaluation of two level cells at high temperatures has been completed. In general it can be seen that good capacity is maintained for about 200 cycles at 140 F, for the test cells, containing 4 g AgAH. Studies with high area 22 AH prototype cells have shown that between 70 and 100 of nominal capacity can be inserted into the battery during charge if a supply capable of at least 100 amps is available. Studies with a series of platinum third electrodes have shown that more than 25 mgsq in of platinum is required for a third electrode signal in the -10 psi range. Studies with 37 mgsq in of platinum show that this quantity is adequate. The schematic diagram for an electronic control system has been prepared. This system eliminates the use of a discharge regulator by sensing current needs of the aircraft system. Indications are that the charger diode can be replaced by an SCR which will eliminate the need for an extra cell and will prevent excessive current flow when the third electrode has signalled end of charge.
