Abstract:

Tests of an ocean-wide three-dimensional thermal structure prediction model for a ten-day time scale have revealed existence of mesoscale dynamic processes that are not treated in the model. Because limitations of ship availability have prevented full-scale tests of the model, the mesoscale processes have vitiated the assumptions of the model. These mesoscale processes include a convergent eddy and rapidly changing near-surface stability in the Eastern Pacific in April 1965, and a developing eddy with associated changes in the intermediate salinity minimum on a second Pacific Ocean test in August 1965. Tests in the Western Atlantic revealed ten-day changes in a front between Sargasso and sub-Equatorial water masses observed in February 1964, and westward movement of a mesoscale tongue of cold water in the Sargasso Sea in August 1964. A second generation model therefore is required to provide for flexible adjustment to existing mesoscale systems, inasmuch as the observed features may be encountered in future tests in both Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
