Abstract:
The extent of the single-phase region near the AgSbTe2 composition in the Ag-Sb- Te ternary system was estimated, and preliminary evaluation was made of the thermoelectric properties of alloys in this region. The highest room-temperature figure of merit obtained was .00143 per degree K on an unoptimized specimen. The results suggest that considerably higher values are attainable by optimizing alloy composition, doping level, and thermal treatment. An exploratory investigation of the effects of partial substitution of bismuth and selenium for antimony and tellurium was not definitive. A second single-phase region was identified in the vicinity of the AgSbTe composition. The extent of this region and the thermoelectric properties of alloys in it were not determined. An investigation was made of possible correlations between the thermoelectric figure of merit as optimized with respect to both doping and temperature, and a number of other physical and chemical properties of materials. The results indicate that such correlations may exist, and may be helpful in the search for improved thermoelectric materials. Author
