Abstract:
The critical charging currents, the maximum allowable currents to avoid high pressure buildup, have been determined for the temperature range of -40 F to 32 F. This current decreased with decreasing temperature. Battery charging characteristics at -40 F have also been investigated. At this low temperature the hydrogen-free capacity of the negative is considerably reduced. The use of fuel cell electrode in sealed cells to increase pressure decay rates have been studied. Four FCE materials were evaluated. Changes in Adhydrode design have been investigated, and as a result, its sensitivity has been increased. Charge-discharge data have been correlated to obtain operational parameters to control battery charging. A full power breadboard of the battery charger was built and tested. The feasibility of delivering 220 amperes with a boost voltage of up to 10V was proved.
