Abstract:
Micropower resistors of 4.7 megohm resistance value have been tested and delivered as scheduled. Performance of these initial models was good in some characteristics and poor in others. The stability of resistors under application of power and particularly in the presence of moisture was a problem area. A series of investigations into conditions which might have produced this instability was then undertaken, in preparation for the fabrication of 20 megohm resistance value samples. The effects of paste composition and firing schedule on film resistance and appearance were evaluated. Several combinations of termination plating thickness and material were compared. Series of different resistance values were then prepared from similar films to evaluate effects of magnification by helixing on performance. The effects of various encapsulants were also evaluated. The encapsulation system employed on the 4.7 megohm samples was found to result in relatively poor performance. After a number of changes in processing parameters it was found possible to consistently produce resistors which were stable in the presence of moisture and under load application. Author
