Abstract:

Results obtained in the Phase Study Unit show that the presence of oxygen and a condensed phase are both important variables in the deposit formation process. At the conditions employed, deposits only formed when a condensed phase and oxygen were present simultaneously. A Screening Unit, designed to simulate the complex kinetic environment present in an empty wing tank has been constructed. The five jet fuels included in our program have been analytically characterized and tested in the Screening Unit at 3 psia. The fuels differed in both their base reactivity at lower temperatures and in their ability to sustain the deposit formation process after passing through a series of higher temperature reaction zones. This latter property, termed the Deposit Formation Cut-off Temperature, was found to correlate statistically with the total sulfur content of the fuels. This suggests that the sulfur content of the fuel influences the deposit formation process, perhaps as a source of free radical initiators. The overall deposit forming process also exhibits a 0.2 order dependence on oxygen partial pressure at moderate oxygen partial pressure levels. One of the most important results from our studies in the Screening Unit is that we have uncovered a reproducible technique for ranking Jet fuels according to their deposit forming tendencies.
