Abstract:
The effects of the internal attenuators on the production of O type TWTs are investigated. Five Techniques for fabricating internal attenuators are evaluated. The most practical of the five techniques of applying carbon loss to helix support rods is pyrolytic carbon. Complete manufacturing information is provided in this document and under separate cover entitled Manufacture of Internal Attenuators for Helix Type Traveling-wave Tubes. The four rejected methods were vacuum evaporated carbon, pyrolytic carbon in porous ceramics, pyrolytic metal, and sprayed colloidal graphite. Two methods by which the loss pattern can be specified are presented. One makes use of a waveguide reflection coefficient and the other of an apparent surface resistivity. The two techniques relate analytically. Both methods yield to the analytical temperature correction technique derived in this report. Twenty percent changes in loss due to changes in the temperature of tube operation are found to occur. Author
