Abstract:
The minimum hydrostatic pressure attainable through tropospheric warming associated with saturated adiabatic ascent in tropical cyclones was computed by an iterative numerical process. Under various assumptions concerning the surface humidity, computed surface pressure decreased at a rate of twenty-five to thirty millibars per degree Celsius of increase in surface temperature. This is a substantially greater rate than that determined by Miller 1958 but is in agreement with Riehls 1963 computations of hydrostatic pressure in hurricanes as a function of equivalent potential temperature.
