Abstract:
A literature review provided information on the operation and design of sanitary landfills. Operational parameters reviewed included basic methods of operation, compaction procedures and expected in-place refuse densities, cover requirements, and site improvements. The engineering design considerations summarized were refuse decomposition including production and control of leachate and gas the use of information on hydrology, geology, climatology, and waste characteristics to evaluate and classify sanitary landfill sites possible uses for a completed landfill site and equipment and cost data. A novel mathematical analysis was performed to define optimum cell shape and size and minimum cover conditions in terms of the various, physical parameters of the landfill. Modified author abstract
