Abstract:
The report covers preliminary studies of the limitations and capabilities of the U.C.-F.A.A. Fog Chamber to provide an environment suitable for aviation weather visibility experimentation. Fog stability, particle size and particle distribution in the Fog Chamber were measured. Special techniques were developed to permit measurements of virtually undisturbed fog particles down to approximately eight microns diameter. Data are presented for measurements of fog stability under various conditions of ambient temperature, humidity, and water to air pressure ratios in the fog generating system. Transmissometer effectiveness is discussed and the development of a short base line transmissometer described. The role of background brightness as a factor in runway visible range is discussed and limited data on the effect is presented. Author
