Abstract:
The research program covered all aspects theory, systems design, hardware and software of the ALOHA system computer communications network. The ALOHA network is the first operational computer net to use radio rather than hardwire communications. The network, in operation since mid-1971, employs packet switching techniques similar to those of the ARPANET in conjunction with a random access broadcasting technique which can multiplex large numbers of remote users on a single radio channel. The major technical accomplishments which can be clearly identified in the development of the ALOHA system are discussed.
