Abstract:
Development of real-time thermoplastic modulator data storage techniques for spectrum analysis by coherent optical processing methods is described. A laboratory model unit developed in a preceding program was utilized with emphasis placed on investigating the wideband properties of the writing beam, the thermoplastic recording medium, and vacuum requirements. Experimental recording to 50 MHz was accomplished. A specially designed coaxial transmission line electron gun which provides very high bandwidth for writing beam current modulation was investigated. New thermoplastic substrates offering a larger recording area were fabricated. An analysis was made of the vacuum environment and components needed for minimum vacuum pumping in the present experimental modulator and for eventual sealed-off operation of the recording chamber. Recorded data format geometry was investigated to determine its influence on the spatial distribution of the output data obtained after optical processing for spectrum analysis. Author
