Abstract:
The oscillations of the cavity in a hydraulic ram situation are similar to the oscillations of the bubble caused by an underwater explosion. There are well known equations which describe the relationships between the bubble period and the energy causing the bubble expansion, and the bubble size in an underwater explosion. Another equation describes the pressure distance relationship around the bubble at the time of its minimum radius. These same equations can be adapted to describe the cavity collapse phase of hydraulic ram. They can be used to show a functional relationship between the cavity period and the energy expanding the cavity, the radius of the cavity, and the pressure distance relationship around the cavity at the time of its minimum radius.
