Abstract:

The Air Traffic Control ATC system for the next 10 to 20 years is described in two parts CONUS AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL includes FSS automation, and OCEANIC AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL includes AEROSAT applications. The design of both systems is based upon significant improvements in the Third Generation ATC System now being deployed. Key features are Metering and Spacing Automation, Intermittent Positive Control IPC, ATC data link services, the Discrete Address Beacon System DABS, the application of Area Navigation to ATC, the Microwave Landing System MLS, and the application of satellites to oceanic ATC. The role of automation in both ATC and the delivery of flight services will be greatly expanded to assure system safety, while increasing airport and control system capacities in a productive manner. The above features are integrated into the expected overall system configuration, and its fail operational features are identified. Author
