Abstract:
This contract effort provided for the design, manufacture and delivery of 90 small-diameter 3 inch inert rocket motors and for the manu-facture and delivery of 60 bond-joint test specimens. Thirty fiberglass composite chambers and thirty graphite composite chambers were manu-factured. The chambers were lined with silica-filled styrene butadiene rubber SBR insulation and cast with inert, simulated hydroxy- termin-ated polybutadiene HTPB propellant. The inert propellant comprised HTPB binder, isocyanate crosslinker, inert salt, and aluminum powder. Thirty maraging steel chambers were also lined with silica filled SBR insulation and cast with inert HTPB PROPELLANT. Propellant cracking problems were encountered with initial motors. Most of the cracked areas were removed by boring the center port to a larger diameter or by recasting the propellant. By casting the subsequent lots of motors with the larger center port diameter about 1.5 inch, the cracking problem was eliminated. The structural performances of the fiberglass and graphite composite cases were verified by hydroburst tests of three chambers of each material. Structural performance was excellent.
