Abstract:
Solidification of High Strength Steel. Technical rept. 1 Jan-31 Dec 1971, Gnanamuthu,D. S. Basaran,M. Kattamis,T. Z. Mehrabian,R. Flemings,M. C. DAAG46-68-C-0043DA-1-T-062105-A-328AMMRCCTR-72-61steel, casting, hot pressing, castings, heat treatment, defectsmaterials, porosity, impurities, sulfides, ironhigh strength alloys, steel, homogenizing, steel 4340, thermomechanicsThe first part of the work describes the effect of homogenizaton, of unidirectionally solidified AISI 4340 low alloy steel, under high isostatic pressure in excess of 20,000 psi on volume percent and geometry of microporosity. Measurements were made using a microradiographic technique. The second part of the report contains results from a study of the effect of homogenization on the morphology of inclusions in unidirectionally solidified iron ingots containing a single type of sulfides.
