Abstract:

The report briefly describes the authors research. One area studied involves the reaction between cobaltocene and silyl halides. With trimethylsilyl bromide or iodide, rapid reaction occurs at room temperature or below with production of the corresponding cobaltecinium halide and hexamethyldisilane. No reaction occurs with trimethylsilyl chloride, however, unless oxygen is present. Evidence is presented that reaction involves a transient cobaltecinium superoxide, which may be trapped chemically, or induce paramagnetic contact shifts observable by nmr. Flow thermolysis of silacyclobutanes has also been studied as a route to silaethylenes, and conditions are formulated for efficient reaction. A preliminary study has been made of transhydrosilylation of diynes by reaction under conditions of photoinitiation.
