Abstract:

The report summarizes research done within a social learning and social psychological framework on conflict in two person groups. Using essentially a behavioral exchange theory a series of studies were conducted on natural dyads, e.g., married couples, and both laboratory and extra-laboratory observation systems were devised. One of the products has been a reliable and sensitive coding system for quantifying both verbal and nonverbal aspects of problem solving behaviors, positive facilitative behaviors, and aversive or punishing behavioral exchanges. Techniques were developed for intervention and bringing about changes in conflictual interactions. The second thrust of the program was concerned with developing those basic aspects of situations which escalate conflict exchanges. These studies have concentrated on a molecular analysis of moment to moment stimulus control of behavior. Author
