Abstract:
Stress wave emission techniques have considerable potential for monitoring the quality of welds, either as they are made, or within a short time of their completion. Two low-cost prototype weld quality monitors have been designed, and several have been made for laboratory evaluation in parallel with a broad research programme into the application of stress wave emission techniques to materials and structures. The report describes these two instruments, their performance and limitations, and the principles involved, and makes a brief reference to the application of stress wave emission procedural tests such as the CTS test.
