Abstract:

High pressure helium-oxygen effects on microbial processes are of interest from the standpoint of spoilage and toxin production in foods the fouling and degradation of materials stored in the habitat possible altered pathogenicity of disease causing microorganisms and to serve as a model system to gain information on high pressure helium-oxygen effects on biochemical processes which may relate to human cells. The present study was limited to a growth response investigation in a high pressure helium-oxygen atmosphere using representative bacteria and yeasts. This information should prove useful to predict gross microbial activity in undersea habitats compared to growth in air at 1 atm.
