Abstract:
The influence of temperature and strain on the thermal diffusivity of particulate- filled elastomers is studied analytically and experimentally. Theoretical bases for the separate effects of temperature history on specific heat, especially in the neighborhood of the glass-transition temperature, and strain-induced vacuole dilatation on the conductivity, are first described included is a comparison of the specific heat based on kinetic theory with new results from the theory of irreversible thermodynamics. An experimental investigation on the diffusivity of two different solid propellants is described. Finally, theoretical and experimental results are shown to be in reasonably good agreement over the entire experimental temperature range, -320 F to 140 F. Author-PL
