Abstract:

The effect of varying the di-isocyanate on the aging properties of polyurethane elastomers is investigated. Polyester and polyether urethane elastomers were prepared with selected diisocyanates and crosslinked andor chain extended. Elastomers prepared with toluene di-isocyanate gave the most satisfactory initial properties and resistance to aging in dry air at 80 C, water at 22 and 80 C, and gasoline at 65 C. None of the elastomers prepared from the di- isocyantes had equally satisfactory all round properties to those based on toluene di-isocyanate. Further disadvantage of these di-isocyanates were their extremely high or low reactivities, high cost and limited availability compared to toluene di- isocyanate. P.S.-PL
