Abstract:

Some aspects of the thermodynamics of metal surfaces are reviewed and then extended to the particular case of a metal which is functioning as an electrode, with specific reference to electrocapillary phenomena. In contrast to liquid metal electrodes, for which it is known that the surface energy passes through a maximum at the potential of zero charge, this work leads to the conclusion that it is, in fact, the surface stress which is directly affected by variations in the charge density on a solid metal electrode.
