Abstract:

Two-dimensional numerical techniques have been applied to obtain solutions of problems of stress wave interactions with cracks in rock media. The SHEP code, a finite-difference Lagrangian program that incorporates a comprehensive elastic-plastic-hydrodynamic behavioral model, was utilized as the basic numerical program in this study. Significant new capabilities of the code developed during this program were a the treatment of antiplane shear, or out- of-plane displacement where the motion is dependent only on the in-plane coordinates and b the incorporation of a dynamic brittle fracture criterion.
